The British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) is horrified by the knife attack in Belfast and extends its deepest sympathies to the victim and their loved ones. We also thank the members of the public who intervened and assisted at the scene.

We are deeply concerned by the acts of terror, racist violence and disorder that have followed including attacks on family homes and vehicles and incidents motivated by racism, anti-migrant hostility and Islamophobia. No act of terror or violence should ever be used to justify the targeting, intimidation or collective blaming of entire communities.

We are particularly troubled by violent disorder in the vicinity of healthcare facilities, including in Belfast and Whiteabbey, and by reports that vehicles were stopped outside the Royal Victoria Hospital. These events are causing understandable anxiety for many patients and healthcare workers, particularly those from Muslim, migrant and ethnically minoritised backgrounds who may feel especially vulnerable at this time.

No healthcare professional should have to fear for their safety while travelling to work, caring for patients or serving their community. Hospitals and healthcare settings must remain places of safety for patients, visitors and staff.
