Recently, I had the privilege of representing a Muslim organization in a consultation with the Greater London Authority’s (GLA) new Free School Meal Programme.

The GLA reached out to us to gain a comprehensive understanding of the requirements and considerations for Muslim families. As part of the discussion, I emphasized the growing importance of the halal certification bodies in ensuring that Muslim dietary needs are met in educational settings.
The Free School Meal Programme is a commendable initiative that aims to tackle food poverty and ensure that every child has access to nutritious meals. However, it is crucial to recognize that dietary requirements differ among diverse communities, including Muslims, who adhere to specific halal dietary guidelines.
In the consultation, I highlighted the significance of halal food for Muslims. Halal is not merely about what is permissible to consume but also encompasses ethical and humane treatment of animals during the food production process. Muslim families place great importance on halal-compliant meals for their children’s well-being and spiritual nourishment. Collaborating with halal certification bodies can ensure that the food provided in schools meets these requirements, instilling confidence in Muslim parents that their children are receiving meals that align with their values.
Engaging with Muslim organisations like ours and consulting with the certification bodies will enable the GLA’s Free School Meal Programme to create a more inclusive and respectful environment for Muslim families. By ensuring halal-compliant options are available, the program can effectively cater to the diverse needs of all students and promote a sense of belonging and acceptance within the educational system.
In conclusion, the consultation with the GLA’s Free School Meal Programme was a significant step towards fostering a more culturally sensitive approach to food provision in schools. By recognising the requirements of Muslim families, we are taking strides towards a more inclusive and equitable educational environment. Embracing diversity and engaging with various communities will undoubtedly lead to a more harmonious and accepting society for all.
