There are multiple reports of 24hr+ waits in A&E, ambulances being dangerously delayed & overflowing wards. There are multiple, complex reasons for this, not only because of winter viruses. We are advising the following SHORT term measures to protect one another:

Take special care around vulnerable individuals and avoid close contacts during gatherings. If not vaccinated against flu or covid please get it done. It may protect your life or the lives of others by reducing the risk of transmission of these diseases. This is generic community guidance at a time of unprecedented crisis. Consult your own health professional for individualised advice. GPs, hospitals, and A&E departments are beyond breaking point. Be patient with the long waits and overcrowding. Have one relative as a coordinator. Be kind to staff working in challenging conditions. Consider the urgency and who you need to see. Pharmacies, walk-in centres, and calling 111 are some options for urgent care instead of your GP and A&E. Escalate and be assertive if concerned. Ambulance services are very overstretched and may take longer to come. In an emergency call 999, but where safe consider alternative transport. Go prepared. Show relatives how to use their devices to communicate. Take a power bank, write a list of medications, emergency contact details and allergies. Pack food, clothes, medication for a 24hr+ stay.
