The British Islamic Medical Association’s research has repeatedly shown that Islamophobia is a persistent and under-recognised issue in healthcare, affecting Muslim staff and patients, yet remains inadequately addressed due to the absence of clear guidance and accountability frameworks. There have been reports and leaks concerning the proposed government definition of Islamophobia.

A non-statutory definition would provide essential clarity for the NHS and other healthcare organisations to identify, record and respond to anti-Muslim discrimination. Crucially, the inclusion of racialisation reflects the reality that Muslims in healthcare are frequently targeted because of perceived race, ethnicity or appearance, not simply religious belief. Without recognising this, efforts to tackle discrimination in the NHS will continue to fall short.
