Lifesavers

Imagine a world where anyone, anywhere, can save a life. This vision isn’t just a dream; it’s the reality that BIMA Lifesavers is actively building, one mosque at a time. This unique program goes beyond teaching CPR; it fosters community engagement, empowers individuals, and bridges the health gap within Muslim communities across the UK.

Addressing the Need

British Muslim communities face higher rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and physical inactivity compared to the general population. This, unfortunately, translates to poorer outcomes from cardiac arrest. Additionally, CPR delivery rates are significantly lower in areas with high ethnic minority populations and socio-economic deprivation. This knowledge gap leaves many individuals unprepared to act in an emergency, potentially costing lives.

The BIMA Lifesavers Solution

BIMA Lifesavers tackles this challenge head-on by offering annual training sessions within familiar and welcoming environments – mosques. The program equips individuals with the skills they need to save lives in critical moments, including CPR, defibrillator use, and choking management.

Culturally Aware and Accessible

Muslim healthcare professionals lead the workshops, ensuring sensitivity and inclusivity for participants. The sessions are flexible, accommodating prayer breaks and dietary restrictions to promote accessibility. Furthermore, partnerships with mosques and local organisations ensure the program resonates with the specific needs of each community.

The Impact

Since its inception, BIMA Lifesavers has empowered thousands in mosques across the UK and beyond with lifesaving skills. Participants like Yasmin, who saved her friend’s son from choking just hours after attending a session, are living testaments to the program’s impact. By providing essential skills in areas with high-risk populations and low CPR rates, BIMA Lifesavers actively addresses health inequalities, bridging the gap and potentially saving lives.

Hear from the Community

“Everyone should know how to give CPR. Knowing what to do means you can act fast and keep the blood circulating to the brain. Knowing these skills could save a life.” – Yasmin, Lifesavers participant who saved a life.

“There’s still significant room for improving survival following cardiac arrests. By teaching people CPR, we equip our communities to unite, inspire and save lives.” – Dr. Mohammed Khanji, BIMA Lifesavers volunteer.
