As of Ramadan 2023, three key members of the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) became trustees of the Centre of Islam and Medicine (CIM).
We are thrilled to share some incredibly exciting news with all of you. As of Ramadan 2023, three key members of the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) became trustees of the Centre of Islam and Medicine (CIM).
Since its inception in 2013, CIM has worked to help our communities respond to ethical challenges in healthcare. They have collaborated with medical experts and senior Islamic scholars across various schools of thought, and have hosted several successful events, some in partnership with BIMA. These include masterclasses on biomedical ethics, genetics, and faith, as well as discussions on important topics such as sexual ethics in Islam.
Due to internal changes of circumstances of the previous leadership, we agreed that building a strong relationship with BIMA would not only prevent the closure of the charity, but with this transition, we can continue to fulfil the vision of CIM while supporting the ambitions of BIMA. BIMA has been at the forefront of uniting, inspiring, and serving Muslim healthcare professions (HCPs) and communities for the last decade and has a track record of delivering effective, sustainable projects.
The new trustees of CIM are:
- Sahira Dar
- Safwaan Hafez
- Sabia Rehman
They will bring a wealth of experience and expertise from various backgrounds, especially their interest in Islamic bioethics and as being effective activists and proven campaigners.
It is important to emphasise that CIM and BIMA remain separate entities, but we will work with legal experts to ensure we manage this transition towards an alignment that ultimately serves our communities and brings the best out of both organisations.
The new CIM trustees will continue to be committed to the mission of CIM which is to enrich the field of bioethics through research, training, education and policy contribution in the contemporary issues that affect the Muslim communities most.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the previous CIM trustees for the tireless service and contributions they have provided and hope they can continue to support and provide advice in the future. One of the previous CIM trustees, Saif Quader, will remain on the board of trustees.
We firmly believe that community involvement will be the key to our success. We are eager to collaborate with our scholars, academics, specialist HCPs and community organisations to reframe our objectives in the upcoming months.
We invite you to join us on this new journey and welcome your thoughts and ideas to help CIM flourish while being rooted in the culture of BIMA.Â
